Remove the lock rings from the front yoke trunnion bearings and drive out the bearings. This separates the front yoke from the spider and the universal joint is now completely disassembled.

Layout of Parts of Front Propeller Shaft Assembly

Remove the snap ring holding the ball bearing in the front propeller shaft housing with a pair of pliers. Remove the shaft and bearing assembly from the housing. Press the ball bearing from the shaft.

If it is necessary to replace the bushing pressed into the front propeller shaft housing, the dowel that holds it in place should be drilled out and the bushing driven from the housing.
In replacing this bushing, it is driven into position and a hole drilled in the bushing to match the hole in the housing, deep enough to take a new dowel. The dowel is then driven into place and prick punched around the edge of the hole in the housing, to keep it in place and also keep the bushing from turning.
In assembling the front propeller shaft assembly, check fit between universal joint ball sleeve and propeller shaft housing, replacing ball housing if necessary. Assemble universal housing, less shafts, first removing cork gaskets, then removing or adding shims between the retainers so that the proper amount of tension is obtained to maintain proper alignment and oil seal.
Install new cork gaskets, shellacing them in the ball retainers, coat the ball and cork gaskets with graphite grease — this will give the proper lubrication and prevent wear on the cork gaskets. Check and if necessary replace the seal in the end of the joint ball housing sleeves. The balance of the assembly operations are just the reverse of the disassembly operations, except that the front propeller shaft should be filled with a generous supply of lubricant, SAE No. 160, after it has been assembled back on the truck.
