1935 Chevy CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

Construction
The clutch used in Chevrolet passenger cars and trucks is of the single plate dry disc type of simple construction and of rugged, sturdy design.

The pressure plate is a heavy cast iron casting with rib-like depressions in its rear surface which dissipates the heat caused by clutch engagement, without warping the pressure plate. It is actuated by means of nine springs and three levers. The springs are spaced in three groups of three between the levers. The levers are spaced 120 degrees apart forming a three-point contact. The final result of this design is a pressure plate that always engages the facing squarely, assuring smooth, positive clutch action.
The cover is a steel stamping. At the three points where the levers are mounted, heavy malleable iron castings are riveted to the cover to rein-force it and form a support for the levers.
The pressure levers are carefully designed and manufactured to provide for strength and weight distribution. The levers are pivoted on pins which bear in the brackets on the outside of the cover. Springs are provided to maintain contact of the levers with the release bearing plate and the bearing plates between the posts of the pressure plate to prevent rattles.
The clutch disc is cushion mounted at the hub. Eight springs form the only means of contact between the hub and the disc carrying the friction facings. By this method, torque impulses of the engine are cushioned out before being transmitted to the spline shaft of the transmission.
The throwout fork and bearing is mounted on a ball swivel, assuring perfect alignment of the release bearing.
The clutch throwout bearing is made of carbon graphite composition and is mounted in a cast iron collar which is attached to the clutch throwout fork by means of two springs. The face of the bearing has two grooves or slots to permit liberation of foreign matter and particles of carbon which may wear off of the bearing.
The collar, into which the bearing is shrunk, has an oil reservoir with an oiler at the top. This allows this reservoir to be filled with oil when the bearing begins to "squeak" and the oil in turn will seep into the bearing, preventing squeaking.
All parts of the clutch are balanced within very close limits before they are passed for use in production or service.
On the passenger car models the clutch pedal is mounted on the frame and connected to the throwout fork through a linkage control which pre-vents engine movement from being transmitted to the pedal and also provides for smooth clutch engagement.

Operation
The clutch is very simple in operation. Pressure applied to the clutch pedal is transmitted to the clutch fork and bearing through a series of link-age. The bearing engages the clutch sleeve and this in turn forces the clutch sleeve and fingers for-ward, drawing the pressure plate backward, compressing the springs and relieving the pressure from the clutch disc and disconnecting the engine from the transmission.
