Drive the counter gear to the rear to remove
the rear bearing and its retainer. Remove the counter gear and drive out the countershaft
front bearing and retainer by tapping lightly around the outer
surface of the bearing.
The bearings can be removed from the spline shaft and main drive gear by supporting
the inner races of the bearing on an arbor press and pressing on the end of the
shaft or gear until they are free of the bearing.
After the transmission has been completely disassembled all of the parts should be thoroughly inspected for wear or damaged surfaces. The bearings should be cleaned in clean gasoline and oiled before inspecting for wear, cracked balls or rollers and roughness.
ction and if it is necessary to replace the gear
on the countershaft, it should be placed in an arbor press and
the counter shaft pressed from the gear. Care should be taken in
reassembling this
part to see that the four keys between the shaft and the gears
are pricked punched in place.
If the bushings in the idler gear show signs of wear they should
be removed from this gear, with

the special tool shown in Fig. 130. This same tool can be used
to replace these bushings in the gear. After new bushings have
been installed they should be reamed to .876"–.877",
leaving a minimum of .002" for oil clearance between the bushing
and its shaft.
Reassembling Transmission
In re-assembling the transmission the case should be thoroughly
cleaned, and the counter gear front bearing and retainer assembled
in place. Place the counter gear and shaft in the transmission
and assemble the washer and rear bearing as shown in Fig. 131.
Push the counter gear to the rear and check between the end of
the gear and the case for
58end play If this exceeds .015", a shim should be placed
between the front bearing and its retainer until this clearance
is obtained. Remove rear bearing retainer.
Place the idler gear in the transmission case and drive the idler
gear shaft into position from the

rear to the front, being careful to have the flat machined surface
on the end of the shaft in a horizontal position.
Assemble the main drive gear and bearing and bearing retainer to
the case. Dip the front spline shaft pilot bearing in transmission
oil and assemble it to the inside of the main drive gear.
Place the sliding gears in the transmission, with the fork channels
towards each other and assemble the spline shaft and bearing through
these gears and into the case.
Assemble the universal joint ball retainer to the case. Place the
transmission in two gears to keep the gears from turning and assemble
the universal joint to the end of the spline shaft. It is important

that the universal joint be held onto the end of the shaft with
a shakeproof lockwasher, a flat washer and a lockwasher under the
head of the bolt. Assemble the speedometer driven gear and shaft.
