rocker arm shaft overflow has reached the point of 150 degrees
Fahrenheit. (Tighten all manifold bolts, valve rocker arm stud
nuts, and cylinder head bolts.)
Valve stems should be lubricated with light oil to make sure they are not sticking—this
is important.
Inlet valve clearance should be minimum .006" Hot.
Exhaust valve clearance should be minimum .013" Hot.
Adjust carburetor idle adjustment for proper operation. The proper adjustment is one-half to one and one-half turns open. Let engine settle. Try turning screw both ways from this setting until the best position is found.
Readjust throttle lever plate screw so that motor will idle at
the desired speed.
Air Cleaner
Clean the air cleaner. Fig. 90. This is done by removing the felt
pad from the top and slushing the copper filter element in gasoline.
Then allowing

the excess gasoline to drain off, dry the element. Dip this in
clean engine oil, allow the excess oil to drain off and reassemble
the felt pad. Replace the air cleaner on the carburetor.
Fan Belt
Check fan belt for proper tension. Adjust if necessary.
Oil Leaks
Check rocker arm cover gasket for oil leaks. Replace gasket if
necessary.
36Water Leaks
Check water pump and hose connections for water leaks, repacking
the pump or replacing the hose connections if necessary.
Road Test
After the completion of the above operations, the car or truck
should be road tested for smooth acceleration, deceleration and
proper idling. When this is being done, the octane selector should
be set for the minimum knock in accordance with the fuel being
used.
Special Fleet Economy Engine
A special engine is available, through production, for fleet users'
use when maximum economy is desired at the sacrifice of performance.
This engine is used in connection with a 3.82 to 1 rear axle,
or a 42-11 ring gear and pinion.
For identification purposes these models will have a special name
plate on the intrument panel and by a plate on the push rod cover
of the engine which will give special engine tune-up specifications.
All parts of the engine are the same as the regular production
engine, with the exception of the cylinder head, which can be identified
by a letter "F" cast just above the No. 1 exhaust port;
the camshaft; carburetor with economy throttle stop and the vacuum
spark control.
All specifications pertaining to the standard production engine
will apply to this engine with the following specifications :
Spark plug gap 040"
Intake valve clearance ....010" with engine HOT
Exhaust valve clearance ...016" with engine HOT Ignition timing
Set at dead center on fly-wheel
NOTE— After the engine has been timed and tuned it is important
that the octane selector be set as far in advance position as is
possible to assure maximum economy.
Water thermostat 170 degrees Vacuum spark advance.. 17 degrees
Never use any oil heavier than SAE No. 20 in this engine or an
oil heavier than SAE No. 40 in the transmission and differential.
